I’ve been blessed to have men in my life who truly exhibits the meaning of fatherhood. I say this in the sense that the term father has evolved from a noun to an adverb. It’s meaning is no longer limited to a term used to describe a male who co-created a child, but it is a description of a type of behavior needed to balance the traits of motherhood.
Being a father is the actions shown by men to their children and other children in their care. It is giving time more than any material things. It is listening without judgement to subject matter that may make you uncomfortable. It is providing unwavering support to their children even when you disagree with their actions or decisions. It is providing a sense of safety, security and unconditional love.
Acting fatherly is no longer limited by gender or age. With the large number of young men not displaying the traits of a father, women and grandparents have had to provide the guidance previously provided by male co-producer of children.
I count it a blessing to have a hero of a grandfather and a superhero of a father who taught me the correct skills needed to be a father to my daughters.
Father’s Day is not one day or a moment. It is the opportunity given to male parents every day to create a legacy that last generations.
